Tufts Chapter of Active Minds
-
Active Minds is a national organization that aims to reduce the stigma around mental illness and mental health on college campuses across the United States. At Tufts, Active Minds is a group of individuals who care deeply about these issues and bringing awareness to them at Tufts. In the past, we've organized programming for the National Day Without Stigma and Eating Disorder Awareness Week, the Mental Health Monologues, and worked with Tufts administration to ensure tuition insurance options are equal across all types of leaves of absence. We currently meet on Tuesday nights at 9pm, in Eaton 202.

What is Stigma?
Active Minds works against mental health stigma, but we often find that people don't understand what this phrase means. Stigma, "a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person", often surrounds mental health and mental illness, creating environments in which individuals feel lesser than, weak, or alone in having sub-optimal mental health. This type of stigma can be seen at cultural, inter-personal, and intra-personal levels. Intra-personal stigma, or self-stigma, can keep individuals from engaging in their mental health and from receiving treatment.
Our goal of eliminating stigma includes connecting students to mental health resources and information, and creating events that help those who are struggling know they are not alone.
